Evaluating changes in water quality in an urban stream following conversion from conventional winter road maintenance to applications of Ice BanMagicTM deicer

چکیده
Otsego Lake (Otsego County, NY), of glacial origin, fonns the headwaters of the Susquehanna River. It is a deep (50.5 m max) dimictic waterbody of4,167 acres having a catchment of46,482 acres. The lake serves as the potable water supply for the Village of Cooperstown and it is noted for its cold water fishery, which includes native lake trout and whitefish as well as stocked brown trout and Atlantic salmon. Otsego provides many recreational opportunities and also serves as an aesthetic backdrop for the historically preserved Village, which depends heavily upon a tourist-based economy (Harman et at., 1997).

Changes in water quality in an urban stream following the use of organically derived deicing products
Willow Brook receives runoff from Cooperstown, NY and flows into Otsego Lake, a phosphorus limited, mesotrophic waterbody. Between 1992 and 1998, the Village of Cooperstown’s winter road management policy included plowing and applying abrasives (particulate material intended to increase traction) mixed with enough salt to minimize clumping. Between 1998 and 2002, Ice Ban Magic and Magic Minus Z...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The significance of road mobility in any nation cannot be far-fetched or beyond economic purpose, spatial interaction and social integration. It contributes enormously to the livelihood of human existence most especially by facilitating regional complementarity of trade, intervening opportunities, and spatial transferability. متن کاملDo Deicing Agents Affect the Quality and Quantity of Aliphatic and Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons in Asphalt Pavements?
Chemical deicing plays a fundamental role for traffic safety on roads and runways in winter season. Traditional deicing chemicals, such as sodium chloride and urea have, however, undesirable effects on surface and ground waters. For more sustainable road and runway winter maintenance, easily biodegradable organic salts such as acetates and formates, have been proposed and taken into use. Next t...

متن کاملIncreased Salinization Decreases Safe Drinking Water.
O decades, there has been increased salinization of fresh water in many regions of the world. Salinization was previously thought to be an environmental problem restricted primarily to arid regions. However, it is now recognized as a global environmental concern impacting humid regions due to human inputs from road deicers, sewage inputs, and water softeners (Figure 1). In both arid and humid r...
